China and the United States will hold the 17th session of their Human Rights Dialogue in Washington on July 23 and 24, the U.S. State Department announced late on Thursday.

U.S. Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights & Labor Michael Posner and Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director-General for International Organizations & Conferences Chen Xu will lead their respective delegations at the talks.

According to a State Department press release, rule of law, freedom of religion, freedom of expression, labor rights, and other human rights issues will be raised over the course of the two-day dialogue.

Stressing that strong promotion of human rights remains a key tenet of U.S. foreign policy, the State Department reiterated Washington's commitment to continuing candid and in-depth discussion with the Chinese government on the issue.

Separately, the Chinese Foreign Ministry was quoted as saying in news release by the official Xinhua news agency that Beijing is willing to discuss and exchange views on human rights issues with the United States on the basis of equality and mutual respect.

Notably, the two nations had held their last round of human rights talks in Beijing in April 2011, with the discussions focusing on issues of common concern, including new developments in both countries regarding human rights.
