Dave Grohl has released a sneak peek of his forthcoming documentary Sound City, an in-depth look at the legendary Sound City Studios.

The film, which is directed by Grohl, takes a look at the studio that's hosted several rock groups, such as Tom Petty, Neil Young, Metallica, Cheap Trick, Rage Against the Machine and Nirvana.

In the preview video rockers like Petty, Mick Fleetwood, Butch Vig and Trent Reznor speak about the studio, their experiences and the Neve 8028, which is one of the most sought after analog recording consoles.

"It's tube driven, it's analog," explains John Fogerty of the Neve. "The bass sounds better, the human voice sounds better."

"Sound City is a film about America's greatest unsung recording studio," Grohl wrote in a handwritten public letter. "Deep in California's sunburnt San Fernando Valley, tucked away behind the train tracks and dilapidated warehouses, it was the birthplace of legend."

Sound City Studios was constructed in 1972 and closed its doors as a commercial studio in May 2011.
