NATO service-members have shot dead an Afghan National Army soldier who turned his weapon against them in northern Afghanistan.
The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said its troops returned fire before the shooter could cause any ISAF fatalities.
An ISAF statement issued on Monday did not disclose the exact location of the incident. It said Afghan and coalition officials were investigating the incident.
It comes a day after an individual wearing an Afghan National Security Force uniform shot dead three foreign civilian employees contracted by ISAF in western Afghanistan.
It is estimated that at least 26 ISAF personnel have been killed in a series of incidents of civilians or militants, disguised as Afghan security personnel, as well as Afghan soldiers themselves turning their weapons on ISAF personnel. Media labeled such incidents as "green-on-blue" attack. But incidents of foreign troops foiling such attacks are rare.
Burning of copies of the Holy Koran at a U.S. airbase in February had inflamed anti-Western sentiments in Afghanistan, and massacre of 16 Afghan civilians by a U.S. soldier in March further fueled them.
