Paul McCartney, an ardent supporter of the British Olympic sporting teams, says it was a mistake leaving soccer icon David Beckham off the national squad. Speaking with the U.K.'s The Sun, the former Beatle says Bex deserved the honor of representing his nation.

"He's a national hero. I would've thought Beckham would be first choice because of his huge contribution to getting the Olympics," Sir Paul said. "I feel a bit sorry for the three over-23s because we're going to be looking at them and saying, 'That should've been Beckham."

Not only does the rock legend think that Beckham could have competed, but that turnout for English fans could suffer:

"He's a national hero, a crowd-puller," he added.
