Dennis Quaid, who is returning to television on "Vegas" (CBS), recently sat on the Television Critics Association panel, answering questions on his television career and latest role.

"Your parents wouldn't even let you watch it," joked Quaid, of his first role on "Baretta" during the 1970s.

"I guess my haircut fits better in [the past]. I'm still fascinated with that era, what America was then. There was such vibrance and optimism and exploration and sexiness -- it was in the air. It was electric. We didn't have cell phones," he added.

On "Vegas," Quaid plays Ralph Lamb, the sheriff of Las Vegas during the period in which it changed from a small-time operation into the gambling and entertainment mecca of the U.S.

"Vegas" premieres September 25, 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
