South Africa Jobless Rate Declines In Q2

South Africa's unemployment rate decreased in the second quarter, data released by Statistics South Africa showed Tuesday.

The unemployment rate dropped to 24.9 percent in the second quarter from 25.2 percent in the preceding quarter. In the second quarter of 2011, the jobless rate was 25.7 percent.

The number of unemployed persons decreased 1.2 percent sequentially to around 4.47 million during the three-month period. Year-on-year, the number of unemployed decreased by 1.5 percent.

The number of persons in employment, meanwhile, increased modestly to around 13.45 million in the second quarter from about 13.42 million in the first quarter. Year-on-year, employment advanced 2.5 percent.

The labor force participation rate was 54.5 percent in the second quarter, down from first quarter's rate of 54.7 percent.
