NBC has issued an apology for its spoiler of swimmer Missy Franklin's gold-winning race and promises that it will not make the same mistake again.
On Monday night (July 30), the network ran a promo during the "Today" show that revealed the results of the race before it had aired.
"When you're 17 years old and win your first gold medal, there's nobody you'd rather share it with," said the commercial, showing the U.S. swimmer holding her gold medal.
"Clearly that promo should not have aired at that time," said an NBC Sports spokesperson in a statement. "We have a process in place and this will not happen again. We apologize to viewers who were watching and didn't know the result of the race."
Despite the folly, says the Hollywood Reporter, NBC's ratings for the 2012 Olympics are outpacing the 2008 iteration by a small margin.
