8/7/2012 1:31 PM ET

The number of job openings reached a four-year high in June, new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed Tuesday, with the biggest gains seen in the leisure and hospitality and accommodation and food service sectors.

Job openings increased by 105,000 to 3.76 million in June from 3.66 million May, a large increase considering job openings increased by only 416,000 for the entire year between June 2011 and May 2012.

The largest gains in job openings occurred in service industries, with the leisure and hospitality and accommodation and food service sectors seeing job openings increase by 29,000 and 35,000, respectively.

All other private sectors also saw moderate or small gains except for retail services, professional business services and arts, entertainment and recreation, which experienced small drops in job opening numbers.

Government job openings continued their downward drop as well, with small dips in job opening numbers seen across the local, state and federal sectors.
