As the London 2012 Olympics enters its 12th day on Wednesday, the world is eagerly waiting to see whether Jamaica's Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will manage to win the women's 200 meter sprint final to add to the gold she won in the 100 meter race on Saturday.
Fraser-Pryce is expected to face stiff challenges to her quest for memorable sprint double from fellow-Jamaican and two-time defending champion Veronica Campbell-Brown, as well as 400m gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross, Allyson Michelle Felix and Carmelita Jeter of the United States.
Incidentally, Sanya Richards-Ross had beaten Fraser-Pryce in their 200-meter semifinal heats on Tuesday night. However, Allyson Flex is considered to be the favorite in the event, largely due to her silver medal winning performances in the last two Olympics.
In addition to the women's 200 meter sprint, there are 15 other gold medals for grabs on Wednesday. This includes final of the men's 110 meter Hurdles in which Americans Aries Merritt and Jason Richardson are expected to swell their nation's medal tally.
Cuba's Dayron Robles is also expected to do well in the men's 110m hurdle. Another medal contender in the event, China's Liu Xiang, was forced to withdraw from the event due a recurrence of an Achilles injury in the heats. Incidentally, Liu had suffered a similar injury during the 2008 Beijing Olympics also.
Other medal events of the day include women's 400m Hurdles and women's Long Jump at the Olympic Stadium as well as the finals of men's Canoe Single (C1) 1,000m, men's Kayak Single (K1) 1,000m, men's Kayak Double (K2) 1,000m and women's Kayak Four (K4) 500m at Eton Dorney.
The bronze-medal match and the finals of the women's Beach Volleyball will be held at Horse Guards Parade. American duo of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are widely expected to win their third consecutive gold medal in the event.
The final rounds of the Equestrian Individual Jumping will take place at Greenwich Park. Britain's 54-year-old rider Nick Skelton is considered to be the favorite to win the gold.
Further, China faces the Republic of Korea in the final of the men's Team Table Tennis competition at ExCeL. The finals of women's 48kg and women's 63kg Freestyle Wrestling will be held at the same venue later in the day. Another medal event of the day is the men's 49er sailing completion at Weymouth and Portland. Medals will also be up for grabs in the men's Under 58kg category and the women's Under 49kg divisions in Taekwondo.
Currently, China is leading the table with a total of 73 medals -- 34 gold, 21 silver and 18 bronze. The United States continues to trail with 70 medals (30 gold, 19 silver and 21 bronze). Hosts UK is in the third spot with 48 medals -- 22 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze.
