Alere Inc. (ALR: Quote) posted second-quarter net loss available to common stockholders of $18.19 million or $0.23 per share versus loss of $4.67 million or $0.05 per share a year ago.

Adjusted cash-basis net income per share were $0.48, up from $0.46 in the prior-year quarter. On average, 10 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.52 per share. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.

Net revenue reached $700.52 million, up from $567.19 million a year ago. Analysts expected revenues of $654.98 million.

Adjusted net revenue was $701.64 million compared to $567.19 million a year earlier.

The report said durable goods orders surged up by 3.3 percent in April after tumbling by a revised 5.9 percent in March.

Mailbox Now Comes To IPad

The popular e-mail management app Mailbox, developed by Orchestra Inc., has been updated to be compatible with Apple's iPad. Orchestra disclosed the news of the update through its official blog. "You asked, we listened. Mailbox is now available for iPad, so you can swipe your way to inbox zero on all your iOS devices," Orchestra's brief blog read.
