Markel Corp. (MKL: Quote) reported second-quarter net income to shareholders of $89.7 million or $8.42 per share, compared to $30.3 million or $3.11 per share last year.

On average, ten analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $3.55 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Total operating revenues for the quarter increased to $693.25 million from $647.17 million in the comparable quarter last year, while seven analysts estimated revenues of $703.14 million for the quarter.
