Malta's merchandise trade deficit increased notably from last year in June, data from the National Statistics Office showed Friday.
The trade deficit increased to EUR232.2 million in June from EUR73.1 million in the same month last year.
Export of goods increased to EUR335.1 million in June from EUR295.5 million a year earlier. Mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials, and miscellaneous manufactured articles accounted for the main increase in shipments.
Exports to the euro area, mainly to France, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Belgium, recorded growth during the month, data showed.
The value of imports advanced to EUR567.3 million during the month from EUR368.7 million a year earlier. Imports from Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium increased.
In the six months ended June, the trade shortfall narrowed by EUR24.2 million year-on-year to EUR880.5 million, the agency said.
