A Libyan army general has been shot dead by gunmen in the eastern city of Benghazi on Friday, a security source said.

General Mohamed Hadia al-Feitouri, a defence ministry official responsible for ammunition and weapons, was leaving a mosque after Friday prayers when a group of gunmen opened fire from a car.

Hadia had served under former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, and was one of the first military officers to defect to the rebellion.

The incident comes a day after Libya's new interim assembly assumed power. The June elections, the first free vote in decades, has faced boycott calls in Benghazi, where local groups staged protests demanding more powers for eastern Libya.
