With a studio estimated $40.3 million over the weekend, "The Bourne Legacy" was easily the top box office draw, pushing "The Dark Knight Rises" out of the top slot for the first time since it opened four weeks ago. Will Ferrell's comedy "The Campaign" also found its intended audience over the weekend, earning $27.4 million and getting off to a good start for distributor Warner Brothers. In a limited release, "Hope Springs" was the third strong opening of the weekend, as the comedy/drama starring Meryl Streep hauled in a steady $15 million at just 2,361 total venues.
Following the very successful "The Bourne Ultimatum," "The Bourne Legacy" had big expectations from distributor Universal. With a $125 million production cost, "Legacy" has the same budget as "Total Recall," which has tanked with its intended demographic so far and has earned just $44 million in 10 days. "Legacy" won't come close to earning the $227 million that "Ultimatum" earned domestically back in 2007, though it should still have no problem getting to at least $100 million in the U.S. and posting some decent foreign numbers to boot.
The biggest problem for "The Bourne Legacy" is the competition it faces in the coming weeks. "The Expendables 2" looks like it will do some damage at the box office starting this Friday, which could limit the audience for "Legacy" as we head deeper into August. Look for "The Bourne Legacy" to put up a couple more solid weekends and to finish as an overall success for Universal, even if the numbers are the worst in the series.
As "The Bourne Legacy" cleaned up with action-seekers over the weekend, R-rated comedy "The Campaign" also found its target demographic to the tune of $27.4 million. Starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, "The Campaign" ended up with the third biggest R-rated comedy opening of the year, as only "Ted" and "21 Jump Street" put up bigger opening numbers when they hit theaters. "The Campaign" also has a decent amount of critical support, which should help it maintain its audience over the next few weekends in the absence of another mainstream comedy.
Aiming at a much different audience was "Hope Springs," a PG-13 comedy/drama starring Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones. "Hope Springs" opened on Wednesday and ended up with a solid $15.6 million over weekend, pushing its five-day total to $20 million for distributor Sony/Columbia. Like "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel," "Hope Springs" mainly has appeal to older adults, which could lead to a long and steady run at the box office if it gathers some positive word-of-mouth. Though "Hope Springs" isn't likely to cross over to other demographics, it will still hang around the top ten for the rest of the month and should end up with some decent overall numbers by the time it's finished.
With three new releases entering the top ten, "The Dark Knight Rises" finally got knocked out of the top spot after three weekends of dominance. "The Dark Knight Rises" still put up $19.5 million in its fourth weekend, pushing its domestic total to $390 million so far. Overseas, "The Dark Knight Rises" is also doing considerable damage, bringing its worldwide total to $835 million already for distributor Warner Brothers.
The weekend also should end up the last time that smash hit "Ted" lands in the top ten after an impressive box office run that places it among the biggest R-rated comedies of all-time. "Ted" is now up to $209 million in the U.S. and more than $300 million worldwide, which are very big numbers for a $50 million production. Over the weekend, "Ted" passed "Wedding Crashers" to become the third highest grossing R-rated comedy ever and now trails only "The Hangover" and "The Hangover II" on the all-time charts.
Over the next few weeks, we'll get a consistent diet of action-thrillers as we close out the summer blockbuster season. Next weekend, "The Expendables 2" will bring back a group of some of the biggest action stars of the 1980s and 90s and family film "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" will also hit theaters on Wednesday, August 15th. Limited releases "ParaNorman" and "Sparkle" are also slated for release next weekend, though their box office impact should be fairly minimal.
