Two U.S. soldiers serving as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were shot dead by an Afghan policeman in western Afghanistan on Friday.
The attacker was shot and killed, ISAF said in a press release. But it did not disclose the identity of the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) service-members.
Officials are investigating the incident that took place in Farah province in the morning, ISAF said.
It was the latest in a series of incidents in which Afghan security personnel targeting ISAF personnel. It is estimated that 36 ISAF personnel have been killed in 27 such incidents, labeled by the media as "green-on-blue" attack.
Burning of copies of the Holy Koran at a U.S. airbase in February had inflamed anti-Western sentiments in Afghanistan, and massacre of 16 Afghan civilians by a U.S. soldier in March further fueled them.
With this, the number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan this year rose to 299, out of which 233 were Americans.
The coalition has expressed concern over attacks on its troops, wearing blue uniform, by Afghan soldiers who wear green uniform. Currently, about 130,000 ISAF troops are fighting militants alongside their 350,000 Afghan colleagues.
A NATO summit in Chicago earlier this year had decided on a new NATO-led mission which will focus on training, advising and assisting Afghan forces after they have assumed full security responsibility across the country by the end of 2014.
