8/17/2012 7:43 AM ET

Tourist arrivals in Mauritius decreased from last year in July, hurt by a sharp fall in visitors from Europe, data released by Statistics Mauritius showed Friday.

The number of tourists visiting the country declined 2.4 percent on an annual basis to 76,166 in July, the agency said.

Contributing significantly to the overall decline, visitors from France, one of the most important markets, dropped 30 percent year-on-year, while arrivals from Sweden decreased 30.6 percent. Among Asian countries, the number of visitors from Malaysia plunged 58.3 percent annually during the month, while arrivals from Singapore dropped 16.5 percent.

In the African market, visitors from South Africa dropped 14.2 percent from last year, while tourists from Zimbabwe fell by 34 percent.

In the January-July period, arrival of tourists in Mauritius remained broadly unchanged from the same period a year earlier, data showed.
