Silvercorp Files Appeal Against New York Court Decision

Silvercorp Metals Inc. (SVM.TO: Quote,SVM: Quote) said Friday that it has filed an appeal in the Appellate Division of New York Supreme Court against the decision of Supreme Court Justice Carol Edmead of the New York County Supreme Court, who granted motions to dismiss the defamation case Silvercorp filed last fall against short sellers and others responsible for publications falsely attacking the company.

Silvercorp said it disagrees with the decision where Justice Edmead ruled that the "short and distort" publications are statements of opinion and not statements of purported fact; in other words the defendants simply had the freedom to express their opinions pursuant to their constitutional rights.

Australia Leading Index Suggests Above-Trend Growth

A leading indicator of Australian economic activity continued to signal above-trend growth for the economy in the coming quarters, a report from Westpac and Melbourne Institute showed Wednesday. The annualized growth rate of the leading index, which indicates the likely pace of economic activity three to nine months into the future, was 5.4 percent in April, comfortably above its long term trend.

Stocks showed a strong upward move over the course of the trading day on Tuesday, adding to the gains posted in the previous session. The rally came even as traders expressed some uncertainty ahead of tomorrow's Federal Reserve announcement. The major averages gave back some ground going into the close but remained firmly in positive territory.
