An al-Qaeda associated Taliban leader who organized and conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces was killed in an airstrike.
NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (IASF) said in a press release on Monday that Afghan and coalition forces confirmed that one of the insurgents killed in a precision airstrike in Watahpur district, Kunar province, on Friday was Yasir, who was involved in the August 8 suicide attack in Asadabad district, which killed three U.S. soldiers and a U.S. civilian. Several other insurgents were also killed in the operation.
ISAF also reported the arrest of a Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, on Monday.
The leader, who acted as a go-between for senior Taliban leadership in Helmand province communicating orders for attacks to subordinate Taliban fighters in the area, was arrested by Afghan and coalition security forces. He also oversaw the emplacement and activation of improvised explosive devices in the area so insurgents were able to operate safely.
A separate operation by Afghan and coalition security forces in Kandahar resulted in the arrest of numerous suspected insurgents.
