8/20/2012 3:22 PM ET

Tanimura & Antle Inc. has announced a voluntary recall of a single lot of romaine lettuce due to possibilities it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The product recall is limited to Tanimura & Antle Field Fresh Wrapped Single Head Romaine. The product bears the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9 and may have a Best Buy date of 08.19.12.

The affected product was available at retail locations August 2 - 19, 2012, and can be identified through a traceability code label: 5417802151. No other Tanimura & Antle products are being recalled.

The company said a total of 2,095 cases of potentially affected product were distributed throughout the US and Canada starting on August 2. Out of this, 1,969 cases were shipped to the following states in the U.S., namely, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Puerto Rico.

The recall is based on the testing of a single random sample by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. There are no reported illnesses associated with consumption of this product. E.coli can cause a diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although healthy adults usually recover within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death.
