Prince Philip, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, was discharged from a hospital in Scotland on Monday after undergoing five days of treatment for a bladder infection, media reports citing officials said Monday.

The prince, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, reportedly appeared to be relaxed and healthy as he left the hospital on Monday. He is said to have shaken hands with staff outside the hospital before getting into a waiting Range Rover without assistance.

Last Wednesday, Prince Philip was taken in an ambulance from the royal family's Balmoral estate in Scotland to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary as a "precautionary measure" after recurrence of a bladder infection he had earlier this summer.

It was the third time in nine months that the 91-year-old was hospitalized for treatment. He had undergone a successful stent procedure to clear a blocked coronary artery at the specialist Papworth Hospital near Cambridge in December 2011.

Later, Prince Philip was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in London in June after suffering from bladder infection. That hospitalization had forced him to miss some events connected with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Nevertheless, he resumed royal duties after recovering from his bladder infection in June. He has since attended the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics on July 27 and watched his grand-daughter Zara Phillips take part in Olympic equestrian competition.

He appeared to be healthy as he took part in Cowes Week on the Isle of Wight last week as Admiral and member of the Royal Yacht Squadron. He even accompanied Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White, for a lunch on board a yacht a day before he was admitted to the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Incidentally, Prince Philips is the longest-serving royal consort in British royalty. Also, his wife, Queen Elizabeth, is the second monarch after Queen Victoria in British history to celebrate 60 years on the throne.

Prince Philip, who was born in Greece in 1921, has generally been in good health despite his advancing years. He had served the British Royal Navy before marrying Queen Elizabeth in 1947. The Royal Couple has four children, the heir apparent being Prince Charles.

The Royal couple are due to attend the opening of the London 2012 Paralympic Games on August 29. It currently remains unclear whether Prince Philips will accompany his wife to the opening ceremony in wake of his brief hospitalization.
