India's consumer price inflation fell to 9.86 percent in July from 9.93 percent in June, the Central Statistics Office reported Tuesday.

Food and beverages costs advanced 11.53 percent and the cost of fuel and light climbed 7.36 percent in July.

Inflation, based on benchmark wholesale price index, eased to 6.87 percent in July, the lowest in more than two years.

The central bank maintained its key interest rate at 8 percent last month as lowering policy rates in the current situation will aggravate inflationary impulses without necessarily stimulating growth.
