Verizon (VZ) announced On Tuesday that a train derailment west of Baltimore in Ellicott City early this morning has damaged its facilities at the site of the accident.
The company noted that some customers in the area may have trouble completing long-distance calls, and data services for some business and government customers may also be affected.
The company noted that it is awaiting the go-ahead from local authorities to gain access to its facilities at the derailment site. The company stated that its technicians are ready to access the damaged facilities when permission is given and will work in round-the-clock shifts until all services are restored.
The company added that it has already restored services to some customers by rerouting network traffic to other facilities.
The company also said that it will provide a further update by 1 p.m. ET today.
