As many as 17 civilians were beheaded and ten Afghan soldiers killed in separate militant attacks in southern Afghanistan, while 'insider attack' claimed the lives of two U.S. soldiers in the country's east, reports said.
Ten soldiers of the Afghan Army were killed in a massive attack by Taliban militants on a check-post in Helmand's Washir district on Monday. Some of the militants were also killed in the encounter.
No group claimed responsibility for the killings, and the Provincial Governor's spokesman did not outline a possible motive in the attack.
On Sunday night, 17 villagers, including two women, were beheaded in Musa Qala district of Helmand province in an attack blamed on Taliban. Their bodies, with signs of beatings and gunshot wounds, were found by the roadside on Monday morning. They were reportedly attending a music and dance party, which the Taliban considers a taboo.
An Afghan soldier reportedly turned his weapon on foreign soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in eastern Laghman province, and killed two U.S. Marines. ISAF soldiers returned the fire, killing the rogue soldier.
The coalition said it was investigating the incident that occurred on Monday. In all, 24 ISAF soldiers were killed in more than 30 insider attacks, where members of the Afghan forces turn their weapons on coalition personnel, in Afghanistan this year.
