Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN: Quote) is planning to introduce an advertisement-supported tablet computer, WSJ reported citing people with the knowledge.

The tablet would display ads when it "wakes up", WSJ's report said. This would help Amazon to price the tablet lower than comparable models.

The tablet may be unveiled at the planned media event scheduled next Thursday, September 6, 2012, in Santa Monica, California. The event may also witness the launch of the second version of Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet.

Amazon, whose main business is online retailing, entered the tablet computer market last November, when it released Kindle Fire, which was competitively priced at $199.

Yesterday, Amazon said it sold out all of its Kindle Fire tablets.
