New York-based Forever Cheese Inc. is recalling Ricotta Salata Frescolina brand cheese from one specific production date as they may be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes.
The recall pertains to all Ricotta Salata Frescolina brand, Forever Cheese lot # T9425 and/or production code 441202. There have been 14 reported illnesses in 11 states which may be related to this lot, the company said.
The cheese was sold to distributors for retailers and restaurants in California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington between June 20 and August 9, 2012.
The potential for contamination was noted after illness was reported in connection with eating cheese.
Listeria Monocytogenes is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
