Greek Unemployment Rate Rises In Q2

Greece's unemployment rate increased in the second quarter, data released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate increased to 23.6 percent in the second quarter from 22.6 percent in the first quarter. In the second quarter of 2011, the jobless rate was 16.3 percent.

There were around 1.17 million unemployed persons in the country at the end of the second quarter, higher by 4.3 percent compared to the first quarter, and 44.2 percent from the same period last year.

The jobless rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, was 53.9 percent during the three-month period, notably higher than first quarter's 43.1 percent.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons increased 1.2 percent sequentially to around 3.79 million during the three months ended June. Year-on-year, employment fell by 8.7 percent, data showed.
