Gainers:

Apple Inc. (AAPL: Quote) is rising 0.64 percent to $674.10 following the introduction of its iPhone 5, which is thinner, lighter, bigger and with a faster processor.

Vical Inc. (VICL: Quote) is up over 14 percent to $4.30. The company announced a worldwide, non-exclusive license to Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) of its patented platform DNA immunization technology and its Vaxfectin adjuvant for use in the production of antibodies.

Response Genetics, Inc (RGDX: Quote) is rising 21 percent to $1.09. GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK) announced that it has acquired five million newly issued shares of the company's common stock at $1.10 per share in cash. As a result, GSK now owns 15.2% of the expanded share capital of RGI.

Nexxus Lighting, Inc. (NEXS: Quote) is up 52 percent to $0.20. An affiliate of Aston Capital, LLC has agreed to invest $6 million in the company through the purchase of convertible preferred stock.

Decliners:

CompuCredit Holdings Corp. (CCRT: Quote) is falling 32 percent to $4.15.

Trading halt:

Trading in shares of Citizens Republic Bancorp, Inc. (CRBC: Quote) was halted. FirstMerit Corp. (FMER) agreed to acquire Citizens in a stock-for-stock transaction with a total value of approximately $912 million.

Trading in shares of Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. (CRTX: Quote) was halted.

After showing a lack of direction throughout much of the session, stocks ended Monday's trading modestly lower. The slightly lower close on the day partly offset the strength that was seen in the markets last week. The major averages ended the day below the unchanged line but off their lows for the session. President Barack Obama reportedly plans to deliver a much-anticipated speech on Thursday outlining his administration's evolving counterterrorism policies. Multiple news sources cited a White House official as saying that Obama will address the use of drones and plans to close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in a speech at the National Defense University. A second union representing immigration enforcement officers has expressed opposition to the Senate version of comprehensive immigration reform legislation, arguing that the bill fails to address the "insurmountable bureaucracy" at the agency that oversees lawful immigration to the U.S.
