Hoping to target one of President Barack Obama's strongest demographics, the Romney campaign released a video aimed at wooing female voters by criticizing the president on his economic policies for women.

"Dear Daughter - Welcome to America. Your share of Obama's debt is over $50,000. And it grows every day," the ad's female voice-over says. The video, released Tuesday, shows a young mother with a worried look cradling her newborn daughter.

"Obama's policies are making it harder on women. The poverty rate for women - the highest in 17 years. More women are unemployed under President Obama. More than 5.5 million women can't find work," the voice-over added.

Obama has consistently polled more favorably among women than his Republican challengers. In 2008, he received 57 percent of the female vote while then-challenger Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., received 43 percent, according to Gallup.

In the most recent Gallup poll, 52 percent of registered female voters said they would vote for Obama, with only 42 percent saying they were for Romney.

Romney has come under fire from women's groups such as NARAL and Emily's List for some of his policies regarding women's issues. Despite a reluctance to join conservatives in wanting to ban abortion even in cases of rape or to save the life of the mother, Romney has declared himself a pro-life candidate and says he would end federal funding for Planned Parenthood.

He has tried to mollify this criticism by appealing to married women and mothers, featuring policies on family values.

Women's health, pay equity and political voice will be a top issue discussed at the first presidential debate, to be held in Denver on October 3, which will discuss domestic policy.
