German telecommunications giant Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGY) said Wednesday that it has appointed John Legere as the new chief executive officer of T-Mobile USA, effective September 22. Legere succeeds Philipp Humm, who resigned in late June. Chief Operating Officer Jim Alling was serving as interim CEO, while the company launched a search for Humm's successor.

Humm, who stayed at the helm of the company for less than two years, moved on to pursue a career outside of Deutsche Telekom so as to reunite with his family, which stayed back in Europe. Humm joined Deutsche Telekom in 2005. According to media reports, Humm is now set to take over as Vodafone Group Plc's CEO for Northern and Central Europe, effective October 1, 2012.

"John is a talented and proven executive who brings a successful track record of leading and operating consumer- and business-focused telecommunications and technology companies," Deutsche Telekom CEO René Obermann said in a statement.

Legere, age 54, is a 32-year veteran of the U.S. as well as the global telecommunications and technology industries. He was formerly the CEO of Global Crossing Ltd. since October 2001, and president and CEO of Asia Global Crossing from February 2000 until January 2002. Asia Global Crossing is a joint-venture formed between Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Softbank and Global Crossing.

He came to Asia Global Crossing after spearheading Dell Computer Corp.'s (DELL) expansion in Asia while serving as president of Asia-Pacific from 1998 until February 2000. He was then named president of Dell's operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Legere began his telecommunications career at AT&T, Inc. (T), where he rose rapidly through the ranks to become one of it's youngest officers. He became the CEO of AT&T Asia/Pacific in April 1994 until November 1997, and was president of worldwide outsourcing at AT&T Solutions from 1997 to 1998. He began his career at New England Telephone in 1980.

"John's experience in the telecommunication and technology industries at Global Crossing and Dell will enhance T-Mobile's ability to deliver superior mobile experiences for our customers as the Company continues to strengthen its business," Obermann added.

DTEGY closed trading on Tuesday at $12.54.
