Semiconductor and software designer LSI Corp. (LSI) Wednesday announced a collaboration with Microsemi Corp.(MSCC) to lower the costs of mobile backhaul by integrating the Microsemi IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol into the LSI Axxia product family of multicore communication processors.
Microsemi Corp. offers a comprehensive portfolio of semiconductor and system solutions for communications, defense and security, aerospace, as well as industrial and medical markets.
The combined platform will enable network original equipment manufacturers to design solutions with greater interoperability, reduce investments and improve time-to-market.
The Axxia product family of multicore communication processors with Microsemi Precision Time Protocol (PTP) supports both legacy and Ethernet-based backhaul.
The combined LSI and Microsemi solution provides performance and determinism benefits and lowers capital and operating costs thereby improving the customer experience.
"The move to Ethernet backhaul is attractive both for its ability to scale in addition to being cost-effective", said Joe Byrne, senior analysts of The Linley Group. He also added, "Adding Microsemi's proven PTP technology to the Axxia platform creates a strong solution for Ethernet backhaul."
Shares of LSI Corp are currently trading at $7.58 up 3 cents or 0.40% on the NYSE.
