Unwired Planet has filed lawsuits against Apple and Google claiming that both have violated several of its patents. The company claims that both companies have violated patents relating to smartphone devices, cloud computing, digital content stores, push notification technologies, and location-based services like mapping and advertising.
Cnet calls Unwired Planet a "patent troll,"—or a company that "wait for another firm to develop products that allegedly infringe their intellectual property, then pounce."
However, according to Unwired CEO Mike Mulica, the technology developed by his company is profited from by Apple and Google and the suits are legit:
"Apple and Google generate substantial revenues from devices and services that rely on the intellectual property that Unwired Planet developed and patented over the last 15 years," Mulica told ItProPortal. "They should compensate us for the use of our patented technologies, which are foundational to mobility."
