LED Medical Amends Deal With Henry Schein; To Sell VELscope Vx Directly

9/21/2012 10:01 PM ET

Canadian firm LED Medical Diagnostics Inc. (LMD.V: Quote, LEDIF.PK) on late Friday said it has amended its distribution agreement with Henry Schein, Inc. (HSIC: Quote). LED Medical's VELscope Vx product will now be available directly through LED.

LED's founder and CEO, Peter Whitehead, said, "While we are grateful for the valuable assistance and exposure provided by Henry Schein during an important period of the VELscope Vx's business development, we believe that our marketing and distribution efforts will be more profitably conducted through a variety of channels. Besides potentially increasing the return on sales to LED, taking greater control of our distribution will give us the opportunity to fine-tune our marketing and distribution plans as we capitalize on the success of our domestic and international sales campaigns."

LED Medical noted that Henry Schein will continue to support VELscope Vx by supplying existing customers with VELscope consumables, and by continuing to service the large group practice client base.

Going forward, LED Medical said it will continue to aggressively market the VELscope Vx, to increase and solidify its market share and dominance in the area of fluorescence-based detection of oral-disease.

Stocks moved sharply higher over the course of the trading day on Friday, more than offsetting the weakness seen on Thursday. In a reversal from the previous session, the markets benefited from some upbeat U.S. economic data as well as comments from a Federal Reserve official. The major averages saw further upside going into the close, with the Dow and the S&P 500 reaching new record highs. As the IRS targeting scandal continues to make headlines, animal-protection charity People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, claims that conservative groups are not the only ones that have faced increased scrutiny from the agency. While the IRS targeting scandal has taken center stage on Capitol Hill on Friday, the results of a new Gallup poll showed that the American public's interest in the story is comparatively low based on historical measures. The poll showed that 54 percent of Americans are following the news that the IRS targeted conservative groups for greater scrutiny "very" or "somewhat" closely.
