Ivory Coast Closes Ghana Border As Many Killed In Attacks

9/21/2012 10:31 PM ET

West African country Ivory Coast has closed its border with Ghana on Friday after at least eight were killed in attacks on its security forces, alleging that these attacks were launched from Ghana's territory.

Ivorian Defence Minister Paul Koffi Koffi reportedly said "armed elements from Ghana" carried out the attack on the army check post in the border town of Noe. Earlier, armed men attacked three police stations south of the commercial capital Abidjan.

Ivory Coast has blamed that supporters of ex-President Laurent Gbagbo, some of whom are in exile in Ghana, are behind the attacks.

The closure affects land, sea and air border with Ghana until further notice.

Earlier, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has said that Ghanaian territory would not be allowed to use as a base for operations aimed at Ivory Coast.
