Safeway Recalls Ground Beef Items Sold In Northwest

Safeway Inc. (SWY: Quote) announced that in cooperation with the USDA Food Safety Information Service's public health alert on raw boneless beef trim products imported from Canada by XL Foods, Inc. that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the company is voluntarily recalling a number of ground beef items sold in Oregon, Washington State and Montana. Safeway was informed by Interstate Meat Distributors that ground beef products produced for Safeway included trimmings from that were subject to XL Foods Inc.'s expanded recall.

Safeway said it is issuing the recall out of an abundance of caution. The recalled products have Sell By dates of 09-07-12 to 09-23-12.

After showing a lack of direction throughout much of the session, stocks ended Monday's trading modestly lower. The slightly lower close on the day partly offset the strength that was seen in the markets last week. The major averages ended the day below the unchanged line but off their lows for the session.
