Denver Broncos Hall of Famer John Elway combined a recent upsurge in pride for the local team with political action Monday, announcing his endorsement for Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

"Governor Romney is a proven leader with the experience and background to turn around our struggling economy," the former Broncos quarterback and current executive vice president for football operations said.

Elway then appeared with Romney at a Monday event at Denver's Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum, where he referenced the Broncos blowout win over hated rival Oakland Raiders the day before.

"I must say today has been a very good day. Not only because of what happened yesterday but because I get the opportunity to introduce to you the next president of the United States, Mitt Romney," Elway said at the Monday event.

"And one more thing, I think this is going to be home to the place that elects the next president of the United States," Elway added. Colorado, a vital swing state in this year's election, is currently leaning Democrat by nine points, according to data from Chicago-based RealClearPolitics.

Although the Elway endorsement of Romney will not lend the former Massachusetts governor any major uptick in the polls, locals excited by recent Broncos wins may take the endorsement into account when watching the upcoming debates.

The Elway endorsement is not a surprise, as the former Broncos QB endorsed Republican candidate Senator John McCain in 2008.

The first debate is slated to take place in Denver Wednesday, with President Barack Obama and Romney discussing domestic policy.

After two disappointing losses against the Texans and Falcons this season, the 36-7 rout of the Raiders this past Sunday has reinvigorated Bronco pride in Denver.

The new-look Broncos, lead by quarterback Peyton Manning and managed by Elway and others, now find themselves trailing only the San Diego Chargers in the AFC West.
