Senator-elect Angus King, an Independent from Maine, has chosen to caucus with the Democratic Party. His decision gives the Democrats a 55 to 45 edge in the Senate.
Just last month, it appeared the Democrats were in danger of losing their Senate majority, but a series of campaign missteps by Republicans allowed the party to maintain a comfortable majority in the upper chamber.
King will replace moderate Republican Olympia Snowe. She is retiring from Congress, citing her frustration with the dysfunction and gridlock on Capitol Hill.
