India's Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray died at his residence after the battle against prolonged illness, reports said Saturday.
Thackeray's doctor told that he suffered a cardiac arrest and was unable to save life despite best attempts. Thackeray was under critical condition for past few days. He was affected by respiratory problems and pancreatic disease.
Thackeray has two sons Jaidev and Uddhav, who is serving as executive president of the Shiv Sena party.
The cremation will be conducted tomorrow, reports added.
Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sent condolences and also postponed today's dinner with opposition leaders.
Thackeray was a political cartoonist at the beginning of his career. Thereafter, he found Shiv Sena and ran the party for more than four decades.
