Inflatable bounce houses are the cause of an alarming number of childhood injuries, says a new report from the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. According to the study an average of 31 children each day visit emergency rooms as a result of injuries obtained in the play attractions.
For the study, the researcher team examined ER reports on roughly 65,000 children between 1996 and 2010. They found that bounce house-related accidents increased by nearly 15 times during the test period.
"If this was an infectious disease, we'd call it an epidemic and it would be on the front pages all over the country," said study co-author Dr. Gary A. Smith. "Our message is that we want children to get up off the couch and be active, but we also like to inform parents of the risks of those activities."
The data was published on November 26 in the journal Pediatrics.
