The FDA has reportedly closed one of the largest organic peanut butter processing facilities in the country after 41 people in 20 different states fell ill. The plant, owned by Sunland Inc. of New Mexico, was closed after FDA inspectors found evidence of salmonella contamination.
According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, the inspectors found evidence of salmonella in 28 different locations within the plant. They also found the contaminate in 13 samples of nut butters and in one sample of raw nuts. There was also evidence of improper handling of nuts, and possible outdoor exposure to rain and birds.
Thus far there is no official statement on the closure from Sunland, who produces the butter for Trader Joe's stores. The company issued a massive recall on its peanut butter products in September, prompting the inspections. They are entitled to a hearing and further review of facilities.
