Sugar may ease the pain felt by some infants while receiving immunizations, says a new study from researchers at Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irib, Jordan. For the study the researchers reviewed 14 studies that collected data on over 1,500 infants.
The researchers found that over all, those babies provided with a sugary substance to suck on while receiving immunizations cried far less than those without. Lead researcher Dr. Manal Kassab says thus far it is unclear if a sweet treat only pacifies babies or actually reduces their pain:
"Giving babies something sweet to taste before injections may stop them from crying for as long. Although we can't confidently say that sugary solutions reduce needle pain, these results do look promising."
Their data appears this month in the Lancet.
