20 Students, Six Adults Killed In Connecticut Elementary School Massacre

28 people are dead, including 20 children, in the worst shooting massacre ever at a U.S. elementary school. NBC News reports a man opened fire on a kindergarten classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School in suburban Danbury, Connecticut.

The masked gunman, dressed in black and wearing a bulletproof vest, is among the dead.

Adam Lanza, 20, has been identified as the lone assailant.

Police detained his brother Ryan Lanza, 24, for questioning. Ryan Lanza, who was initially reported as the attacker, was at work as an accountant at the time and is not considered to be involved.

Students and teachers were rushed out the school into an adjacent parking lot as a SWAT Team cleared the building.

600 students attend the elementary school considered on of the best in the region.

Lanza's mother, a former worker at the school, was killed by her son at their nearby home. He then drove to the school and went on a rampage that ended with his suicide.

The White House spokesman Jay Carney says President Barack had "enormous sympathy for families that are affected."

The president was briefed on the situation early this afternoon. Asked whether the incident will spark a debate on gun control, Carney said "today is not the day."
