A landmine explosion in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar on Monday killed at least ten young girls, reports quoting provincial officials said.
Two other girls were hospitalized with serious injuries.
The victims were girls aged between nine and 13 who were collecting firewood in a village in the Charparhar district.
The mine reportedly exploded when a girl hit it with an axe. It is not clear whether the landmine was planted by militants or was a Soviet-era dud mine left over from the country's decades-old conflict.
