A letter that John Lennon wrote to Eric Clapton, dated September 29, 1971, has sold for $35,000 at an auction organized by Profiles in History.

The auction house explains that it was Lennon's draft of the final letter and that "the content of the final version sent to Clapton is unknown. In this draft Lennon writes unequivocally of his respect and admiration for Clapton and how their minds could transform music and the world."

In this letter, Lennon writes:

"Both of us have been thru the same kind of [difficulties] that I know you've had and I know we could help each other in that area - but mainly Eric - I know I can bring out something great - in fact greater in you that had been so far evident in your music, I hope to bring out the same kind of greatness in all us - which I know will happen if/when we get together."

In 1969, Clapton, who had recorded with the Beatles, joined forces with Lennon and his Plastic Ono Band to perform at the Live Peace in Toronto concert, which was then turned into an album.
