US Campus Shooting Suspect Ruled Mentally Unfit For Trial

A U.S. judge has suspended the criminal case against a man who shot dead seven people at Oikos University in California last year, ruling that he is mentally unfit for trial, reports said quoting Assistant Public Defender David Klaus, who is the court-appointed lawyer for the defendant.

At a brief hearing in Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland on Monday, judge Carrie Panetta accepted a defense argument that 44-year-old One Goh suffered from paranoid schizophrenia that makes him incompetent to stand trial. Reports from court-appointed psychiatrists who examined the former nursing student of the small Christian university substantiated the argument.

Panetta ruled that Goh should be sent to Napa State Hospital - a California mental institution - for treatment, and should be reviewed after 90 days to know if he is competent enough to stand trial.

The suspect opened fire in a classroom on April 2, 2012, followed by multiple shots throughout the building, leaving seven people dead. By the time police arrived the scene, the shooter had fled. An intense manhunt ended with his capture at a supermarket in nearby Alameda city, where Goh confessed to a security guard of the brutal massacre he committed, police documents say.

However, a month later, he pleaded not guilty in the court of charges of seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder.

The police recovered a .45-caliber gun, believed to be used by Goh during the rampage.

It is not clear what provoked Goh, an Oakland resident, to carry out the shooting, but he was reportedly angry over not getting a tuition fee refund after he dropped out of the institution in November 2011.
