A soldier serving part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was shot dead by a suspected member of the Afghan Army in southern Afghanistan on Monday.
An ISAF press release said on Tuesday that an "individual wearing an Afghan National Army uniform turned his weapon against service-members yesterday, killing one." It did not disclose the victim's nationality.
British media quoting the UK Defense Ministry said the soldier was a Briton from 28 Engineer Regiment, serving with Task Force Helmand, who died at Patrol Base Hazrat in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand.
The assailant had initially turned his weapon on fellow Afghan troops, then targeted foreign soldiers, before being gunned down, reports say.
ISAF as well as the Afghan National Army said the incident was currently under investigation. A Taliban statement claimed responsibility for the incident.
It was the first incident of the so-called "green-on-blue" insider attack and the second foreign troop casualty this year in Afghanistan. Also, it was the sixth British troop to be killed during the latest six-month tour of duty by Afghan security personnel.
With this, the number of British soldiers killed in anti-insurgent operations in Afghanistan since 2001 rose to 438, according to ICasualties.org, an independent website that monitors international troop casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Britain has the second largest foreign military contingent in Afghanistan. The southern province of Helmand still remains a Taliban stronghold, where most of the 9,500 British soldiers fight the militants as Task Force Helmand.
In all, 405 coalition military personnel were killed in the war-torn country last year, the lowest number of ISAF troop casualties during the last four years.
