Mariangela Melato, the Italian actress best known for her performance as a spoiled but stranded socialite in the 1974 comedy, "Swept Away," has died in a hospital in Rome at the age of 71.
According to reps from the hospital she passed on Friday (January 11); LaPress, an Italian news agency, reported that she was suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Although "Swept Away" was her most well-known role, Melato starred in dozens of movies including "The Seduction of Mimi," "Love and Anarchy," "The Good Soldier," "Come Away with Me" and "Flash Gordon."
Her role in "Swept Away" was reprised by Madonna in a 2002 remake of the film.
