Finland will contribute EUR 2.3 million to support UNESCO's activities in the field of freedom of expression in the Arab States of Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.
UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova and Finland's Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Antti Kuosmanen, signed an agreement to this effect on Wednesday, the U.N. Educational and Cultural agency said in a press release. "This contribution is timely as we are supporting countries which are experiencing deep societal transformations," said Bokova, while emphasizing UNSECO's role in sustaining efforts in the Arab world towards strengthening human rights and human dignity. She also expressed her profound gratitude to the Finnish government for its financial contribution, which comes in addition to other extra-budgetary contributions from the Finnish Foreign Ministry.
Kuosmanen emphasized "Finland's commitment to contribute to the current process in the Arab States through capacity building and the transfer of know-how, and to accompany the related countries in their aspiration to prosperity, freedom and democracy." The Finnish Ambassador expressed his sincere hope that Finland's contribution would contribute to wider achievements in these countries. He also expressed Finland's full appreciation of the Director-General's efforts to reforming UNESCO.
