Southwest Airlines Jan. Traffic, Load Factor Down; Capacity Up 0.5%

Southwest Airlines Co. (LUV) reported a decline in January 2013 traffic and load factor, while capacity edged up 0.5%.

In January, traffic, measured in revenue passenger miles or RPMs, dropped 1.7 percent to 7.25 billion, from last year's 7.38 billion, with load factor falling 1.6 points year-on-year to 72.7%, from 74.3%.

On the other hand, capacity, measured in available seat miles, or ASMs, increased 0.5 percent to 9.98 billion from 9.94 billion a year earlier.

Monthly passenger revenue per ASM or PRASM is estimated to have increased nearly two percent compared with January 2012.
