A particular gene variant of the cholesterol particle lipoprotein (a) or LPA, may be linked to increased risk of blockages in the aortic valves says new data from researchers at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.
For the study the researchers reviewed health records from thousands of cardio patients. They found that those with this specific variation were significantly more likely to suffer heart attacks than those without.
"This is an important step forward in understanding the biology of the development of aortic stenosis and how this common genetic variant, which is found in 7 percent of the general population, contributes to that risk," said study senior author Dr. Wendy Post.
The data was published on February 7 in the New England Journal of Medicine.
