Bulgaria's Inflation Rises Further In January

Bulgaria's consumer price inflation accelerated further in January, data released by the National Statistical Institute showed Thursday.

The consumer price index increased 4.4 percent on an annual basis in January, after rising 4.2 percent in December. In November, prices had gained 3.9 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages prices climbed 6.9 percent annually, while clothing and footwear prices decreased 1.9 percent.

Housing costs and utility prices were higher by 9.5 percent compared to last year, and transportation costs up by 2.2 percent.

On a monthly basis, the consumer price index moved up 0.4 percent in January, as it did in the previous month.

At the same time, the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP), measured under the EU methodology, increased 2.6 percent year-on-year in January, after rising 2.8 percent in December.

On a monthly basis, the HICP edged up 0.2 percent, after rising 2.8 percent in the previous month, data showed.
